Kendri Singh Sabha Extends Support to Jailed Activist Nodeep Kaur

Chandigarh, 7 January (2021): Sikh intellectuals today extended financial and legal support to labor rights activist Nodeep Kaur picked up by the Haryana police from Kundli (Sonipat) where she was protesting for the rights of workers of a factory on 12 January. Police tortured her and sent her to jail under serious charges (IPC 307, attempt to murder) and she has been denied bail by the Session Court.

On Friday, Meena Harris, an American lawyer, author, and niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris took up her case tweeting that “she (Nodeep Kaur) had been arrested, tortured and sexually assaulted in the police custody” and demanded her release.

Belonging to a Dalit labor family, 23-year-old Nodeep hails from a village near Muktsar in Punjab and working with the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan in Sonipat. She has been participating in the struggle of the farmers now camping at Kundli, the Delhi borders.

Sikh intellectuals, yesterday, gathered at the campus of Chandigarh based Kendri Singh Sabha and decided to take up Nodeep’s case. The Sabha’s representatives approached her sister Rajvir and promised all sorts of help to the victim’s family.

They also appealed to the Sikhs world over and farm leaders particularly to extend immediately support to the victim family in their fight against injustice and police brutality.

Participants in the meeting included: Prof Manjit Singh, former head of Dr. Ambedkar Chair, Punjab University Chandigarh, Senior journalists Jaspal Singh Sidhu and Sukhdev Singh, Dr. Piare Lal Garg, Gurbachan Singh editor, Des Punjab, Rajinder Singh, Khalsa Panchayat and R.S Cheema senior advocate Punjab and Haryana High Court.
