On 30th June, a video started circulating on the social media, where several masked men could be seen dumping dead bodies of COVID infected patients into a pit. The video was from the Ballari district of Karnataka.
The callous way in which the burial of dead bodies was handled, irked a lot of people on social media. The video was also shared by congress leader D.K Shiva Kumar on twitter. He wrote along with the video, “it’s disturbing to see bodies of COVID patients who have died being dumped inhumanly into a pit in Ballari.” He further added, “is this civility? This is a reflection of how the government has handled this corona crisis. I urge the govt to take immediate action and ensure that this doesn’t happen again”.

After the video went viral, Ballari deputy commissioner S S Nakul, issued a statement. He said, “The video shows that the protocols to be followed for burial (body bags/lining, etc) have been strictly followed. However, the district administration is deeply upset and sorrowful at the manner in which the remains of the deceased were handled.”
He then added, “The district administration condones the disrespectful handling of the bodies while being lowered onto the ground by the field staff. The entire field team involved has been disbanded and will be replaced by a new team trained by the HoD, Forensic, VIMS. The district administration regrets the incident and hereby, unconditionally apologises for this incident to the families of the departed in particular and people of Ballari in general”.
