In the 2017, assembly elections, even though congress had 28 seats, BJP beat it in forming the government with only 21 seats in the 60-member assembly. It formed a coalition with the National People’s Party (NPP), Naga People’s Front (NPF), and Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP).
On Wednesday, a news coming from Manipur was a reason of rejoice for the congress party. In a surprising turn of events, 3 BJP MLA’s resigned from the party and shifted towards congress. With their resignation, BJP now has only 18 seats out of 60-member assembly.
However, this was not it. After 3 BJP MLA’s, 4 MLA’s from NPP also joined congress along with one Trinamool congress MLA, T Robindro Singh and one Independent MLA.
The 3 BJP MLA who have withdrawn their support from the Biren Singh led coalition government are T Thangzalam Haokip of Henglep Assembly Constituency, Samuel jendai from Tamenglong Assembly Constituency and S Subashchandra from Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Assembly Constituency.
Congress could not be more elated and is looking forward to form it’s government in Manipur. Congress party leader Ningombam Bupenda Meitei said, “we are going to have a new coalition government in Manipur, led by the congress party. Along with the like-minded parties, we are going to form a government in Imphal. It has been a long-standing demand and dream for the entire state, as the mandate had been given to the congress and today marks a new beginning. It clearly shows the downfall of Narendra Modi and BJP led regime. This is a new trend and beginning for 2024, this is a new beginning for 2022 in different states of the country and I am sure this is the rise of the congress and like-minded parties.”
