A devastating outbreak of a deadly pandemic coronavirus has shaken China’s Wuhan city, due to the virus outbreak till now 1,770 people have already lost their lives. Coronavirus is not in a form of single virus which is affecting the people in whole wide world however it is a large family of viruses that causes illness ranging from normal cold to more severe diseases. A common cold is also a type of a coronavirus, back in 2002-2003 a spread of virus known as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome – CoV) comes in a category of coronavirus as well.
This time the virus which is infecting people is termed as “Novel Coronavirus”. The naming of the virus was kept due to rapid spread and the doctors didn’t had enough time to even name the virus properly so they kept the name of the virus as “N-CoV” which refers to novel coronavirus as “Novel” stands for new. Mostly the original source of other coronaviruses is some kind of animals after which it is spread from human to human transmission for example in the case of SARS the original source was a “Bat”. Another deadly outbreak of a virus named as MERS – CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus’s) original source was found to be a “Camel”.
This time there is no specific original source has been found in the case of novel coronavirus however some scientist suspects that the reason behind the spreading of virus is caused by snakes which still is not successfully proven. On the other hand, some scientists think that the original source of N- CoV may vary from bats as well, because the N-CoV has 96% of similarities as to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS – CoV). At the time of writing this article the novel coronavirus has infected approximately 24,759 people across the globe.
It is very difficult for doctors to diagnose the virus as the symptoms are really similar to other common cold like cough, headache, chills, fever etc. However, in an extreme case a person may suffer from pneumonia as well. For proper diagnoses of the virus a laboratory test is mandatory.
While the virus is spreading at its peak all the countries are taking various precautionary methods in which India is no less. According to the health minister Harsh Vardhan India is monitoring the new coronavirus outbreak at the highest level to prevent an epidemic, increased screening at various ports of entry and keeping tabs on some 15,000 passengers who have returned from abroad. India reported three confirmed cases in the state of Kerala, out of more than 1,700 people tested around the country as of Thursday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. That included 654 people evacuated from Wuhan, all of whom had tested negative. Harsh Vardhan said “We started taking action on this in the middle of January, at least two weeks before the World Health Organization declared it as an emergency of international concern” Increased screening measures have been taking place at various airports and seaports for the people who are coming from China, Japan, Thailand and South Korea by taking down their detailed history and then sharing that information with state-level and district-level surveillance officers to keep tabs on them through an integrated disease surveillance program , till now more than 2,000 flights have been scanned. As per health minister15 laboratories to test for the virus, and the country has the potential to build up to 50 labs if the need arises.
One of the major factors apart from health which is affecting India is the economy because due to virus outbreak 14% and delays in shipments can have a bearing on economic activity in the former.
