Women have always played an essential role in one’s life. Either it is mother, sister, wife we need them every time. However, sometimes we forget to pay proper attention to a woman’s need. Women have become the victim of negligence.
Recently the government of India is likely to revise the legal age of marriage for women. Earlier the legal age for a girl to get married was 18 years however as per sources now it will be revised to 21 years. For this, the government has considered the high-level committee and submit their recommendation by July 31st.
Right now the minimum legal age of marriage for girls is 18 years and for boys, it is 21 years.
In the 1978 amendment to the Sharda act of 1929, the age of marriage for girls was shifted from 15 years to 18 years.
However, in 21st century, India is progressing and women are becoming more carrier oriented. Now a day’s women are also levelling up their passion for their career and job. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, “Centres are asked to set up a task force to examine the age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering maternal mortality rate, improvement of nutritional level and related issues.”
Following which the WCD announced that a body has been set up and there are possibilities of the legal age of marriage for women to be shifted from 18 to 21.
A study of UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) shows that 27% of the women in India are married before turning 18, this creates a strong impact on their mental and reproductive health. A girl’s body below the age of 18 is not properly developed for reproduction. It is as bad as child marriage if a girl gets married before 18 years of age.
Another data from UNICEF reveals that India has the highest mortality rate for children aged below five years. The risk of health issues and the number of death of young children is comparatively higher in children born to a mother who gets married at an early age.
